It is with a heavy heart, we announce the passing of one of our own, Mike Solberg. Mike fought until the end and lived every minute to the fullest. He was not only courageous, but an example of how we should live our life day to day. Our sincerest thoughts and prayers are with him and his family during this time.

For most of Mike Solberg's career as a firefighter with the Schaumburg Fire Department, he has been battling brain cancer. Throughout that fight, his firefighter colleagues have been beside him and behind him.
Friends, as well as firefighters from throughout the Chicago area, attended the event at Durty Nellie's, listening to live music and watching the Chicago Bears play Washington.
"This is amazing," said Maureen Solberg, Mike's wife. "I can't even put into words how supportive and amazing they are."
Schaumburg Firefighters Shop For Those In Need posted: 12/7/2015
On December 5th the Schaumburg Firefighters Benevolent Association sponsored their 25th annual Christmas Shopping for Families In Need at the Target store at Schaumburg and Barrington Roads. The firefighters adopted 12 families through the Schaumburg Township and spent $5000 purchasing presents, including clothing, toys, games, books, bedding and gift cards to Target, gas stations and grocery stores. Target generously opened their doors an hour early, provided breakfast for the firefighters and a discount on our purchase. The gifts were wrapped by the firefighters and their families along with 5th graders from Hoover Elementary School in Schaumburg.
This event started in 1990 when 2 firefighters with $400 shopped for a single mom and her son and a local senior. Over the years it has grown into over 25 firefighters and their families with $5000 shopping for 12 families.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Fire Service
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder in the Fire Service posted 4/2/2015
Emergency responders are more susceptible to Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) because of the nature of the profession coupled with the personal demands and challenges we all face. IAFF members respond to any number of traumatic incidents on a daily, ongoing basis. If not treated properly, the anxiety can build over time and can lead to PTSD. But all too often the effects can easily be overlooked as “a part of the job.” Presenters will discuss causes and signs/symptoms of PTSD and best practices for addressing it within your local. Pay particular attention to Local President Joe Schulle from Philadelphia Local 22 starting at 43:33 concerning stress in the fire service.
Presenters: Suzy Gulliver, Director, Warriors Research Institute and Professor Texas A&M Frank Leto, Uniformed Fire Officers Association Local 854 Joe Schulle, President, Philadelphia Local 22 Kenneth Stuart, President, Seattle Local 27 Patrick Morrison, IAFF Health and Safety (moderator)
